Auf dem Heimweg kamen wir bei einem "Reis-Festival" vorbei - eine Art Erntedankfest mit Tanzaufführungen... die Kinder spielen dabei den Reis... ich habe im Picasa-webalbum auch die Videos drangehängt - mit "Drachentänzen".

IOC Autumn Hike and Barbecue, 17th Oct 2009

At 10 am we met at Uji (Keihan) station – surprisingly we were a very small group for the touristy stuff – while Dominikus and Junko had to go shopping for the barbecue, we (Estella, Peter and myself) were guided by Kuriko to the beautiful Byōdō-in (平等院) Temple. The most famous building in the temple is the Phoenix Hall (鳳凰堂 Hōō-dō), constructed in 1053.
If you have a look at the photo – even though it is a side view, the building might be familiar to you, the Phoenix Hall is also shown on the 10 Yen coin. Did you know that in 1968 a scale replica of the Byōdō-in was built in Hawaii?
At 11:30 am our group was complete to enjoy the autumn hike. First we headed to the Uji shrine parking lot and for the start of our hike we walked up through the entrance of the Uji shrine. From there, we could enjoy a beautiful trail through the forest – at 12:30 we reached a view point from where you could see the Byōdō-in temple. After 1 more hour hiking we walked down a long stairway until we reached a big dam. This area was very convenient, because we found a toilet and a vending machine. From there, it was maybe 20 more minutes to our barbecue site next to the Uji-river. While Dominikus and Junko went on to get the car, the rest of the hikers could relax at the barbecue site.
Koji, Peter and Keisuke immediately took responsibility for setting up the barbecue fire/coal. We had a big variety of food and drinks to share– different kinds of meat, fish and vegetables for the grill, but also a tasty Udon-soup on béchamel basis and not to forget, a classical hot “Glühwein” from Dominikus. I’d like to especially thank Koji here, who brought some fine alternative barbecue food: tama-negi-tenpura (玉ねぎ天), deep fried onion balls in a light batter; and satsuma-age (さつま揚げ), a fried fish cake from Kagoshima which is a pounded white fish meat mixed with flour. Everything was so delicious!
At 17:15 we started cleaning up and around 17:50 we came just in time to a colourful rice harvest festival at Uji (Uji-ten-matsuri, 宇治天まつり). Most of us stayed to watch the festival for a while but we left before it finished because of rain. Anyway, it was a beautiful day and it was great talking to so many IOC members in one meeting!
